I would remove the egr mounted below the carb and clean with carb cleaner or brake clean and reinstall. There is a metal pintal inside that should move freely use a screw driver and see that it moves easily. If cleaning and no change replace it.If the collector for the exhaust which is connected to the exhaust manifold is clogged or ur cat convertor are old u could be loading up the carb and therefore causing the backfire possibly.U can remove the collector but,you have to pull the exh manifold to do this and soak it in brake clean or engine cleaner and let dry.I used muratic acid (use with care) over night and then rinsed with soap/water and let dry problem solved. The collector is about the size of a large jar and recommend to soak the nuts, bolts with liquid wrench,bp blaster for a day to ease before you plan to remove them to prevent breaking studs or bolts off bc of the heat and age and if never removed recently.

The carbureted 86-93 Mazda trucks do have a catalytic converter off the exhaust manifold, whereas the fuel injected version does not. If you have the carbed version, and you put on a header (like a pacesetter) to replace the exhaust manifold, then you will get rid of 1 catalytic converter.
