It needs a new 'Shifter Sheet' Easy to put in and not too expensive. It is available on Ebay.
the L means you are in low range in the transmission, ie 2 wheel drive low or 4wd low
If you put the sami in low range and the gears are working in low (IE: The front drive shaft is turning) Then the problem is the HUBS. I had this problem and the prior owner had assembled the hubs incorrectly which prevented the hub or hubs from locking. Specifically, the spring was not in between the selector twist knob and the lock-in ring, it was between the lock ring and the inside of the hub. Remember BOTH must be lock for the front wheels to be driven. This is an easy fix, just pull out the hubs, clean them up and reassemble correctly.

If your Suzuki Samurai won't engage in 4 Low, the issue could stem from a few common factors. First, ensure that the transfer case is fully engaged by fully pressing the clutch and shifting into neutral before attempting to switch. Additionally, check for any linkage issues or damage, as well as low fluid levels in the transfer case. If these areas are fine, the problem may lie within the transfer case itself, which could require professional inspection or repair.
If your Suzuki Samurai won't go into gear, it could be due to several reasons. Common issues include a faulty clutch master or slave cylinder, low transmission fluid, or a worn clutch. Additionally, if the gear linkage is misaligned or damaged, it may prevent shifting. It's best to inspect these components or consult a mechanic for a thorough diagnosis.
Well your 4WD might be going out, it probably wouldn't hurt to get it checked out.

To engage the 4WD in a 2006 Kia Sportage LX, locate the 4WD selector switch on the dashboard. Turn the switch to the desired mode—either 4WD High (for slippery conditions) or 4WD Low (for off-road or challenging terrains). Ensure the vehicle is at a complete stop before shifting into 4WD Low. Always refer to the owner’s manual for specific instructions and guidelines.
Try downshifting Down shifting will help but the reason it helps is because the Samurai is a low power engine. Brand new from the factory my '86 1.3 liter is 66 horsepower. That is less that some motorcycles and maybe even a few golf carts... Ha! Seriously is is a lot of metal powered by a small engine so the weight to Horsepower ratio is low.
