its basically the same thing. an automatic tranny wont go in Overdrive until youre going at a generally constant speed. the same is true with a manual transmission- while driving on average roads (40-55 mph) you will not shift into the final gear until you are going at a constant speed. I had the same problem with my '92 camaro 3.1 V6. Take your car to a transmission specialist, and he can throw a diagnostic pad on it. On mine, my entire transmission and torque converter were fried. Cost me $1000.
