I found having a repair manual specifically for your make/model/year a great start. I'm in the same boat and this is what I have found out and will be doing next weekend. First, I had the a screw placed in the regulator to keep the window up until I am able to replace the window regulator. The regulator comes complete with the motor, so what I will do is remove the current regulator have a friend holding up the window has I am doing this so I wont have to remove the window (to skip a step), then just attach the new regulator in the same place as the original.

It sounds as if your window motor is either going out or the window regulator is binding somewhere. I have heard of people putting a good silicone spray along the window track and that sometimes helps. You will have to remove the interior door panel to get access to the window track. The three bits of tape originally held some felt like material that is meant to sit in between the window regulator and other parts of the inside of the window like the bar from the quarter window. It does this in order to create a buffer between the regulator and the other bits so as not to obstruct the path of the regulator. When the path is obstructed the regulator wont operate properly. Moral ... replace all worn exterior weather stripping !
