these had a head gasket problem - the escaping gas forces coolant out of the engine into the bottle, resulting in overheating. Replacing the radiator cap can help, but not fix, the problem - as will not accelerating hard. Also, it might be the thermostat
My '98 outback had an ongoing overheating problem. It would over heat then take the radiator cap off, and the car would be good. It was undetected by pressure testing, but in the end it was by blown head gasket that caused my car to overheat.

In a 1998 Subaru outback the heater blower works but no warm air?

In Subarus the temp control for the heater does not control the coolant flow, just airflow past the heater core. If you get no heat, there is no coolant in the heater core -- either there is no coolant or it is not circulating.

How do you bleed Subaru Outback 3.0 heater system?

To bleed the heater system on a Subaru Outback 3.0, start by ensuring the engine is cool, then remove the radiator cap. Next, run the engine with the heater set to maximum heat and the fan on, allowing air to escape from the system. Monitor the coolant level in the reservoir and add coolant as necessary to maintain the proper level. Finally, check for heat in the cabin to confirm that the system is properly bled.

How do you burp a 1998 Subaru Outback radiator?

You should not need to burp the radiator. You fill the radiator to overflow, put the cap on and any trapped air will work its way out through the coolant recovery bottle as you go through several heat-cool cycles. If you are finding air in your radiator there is a good chance that you have a head gasket issue. Ask me how I know. --Ken

What causes a 1997 Subaru legacy to over heat?

You could be low on coolant, a stuck thermostat, engine fan not coming on for starters. If still overheats, I would recommend taking it to a Subaru dealer.
