Most likely because your speedometer cable is broken. If I find the guide for removing the instrument cluster, I'll post it here.
the speedometer on my 97 toyota camary stopped working and the check engine light came on why
There are a few reasons that could cause the speedometer to stop working on your Toyota Camry. If the mileage is still working then the speedometer cable end is damaged. If both the odometer and speedometer do not work then the cable is most likely broken.
If the speedometer doesn't work either, then the cable broke or came loose. Otherwise, the gears in the odometer broke.
This happend on one of my cares. It was just a cable that needed to be changed under the hood. I am sure anyone at napa or autozone can help you out.
Maybe cable is going bad and will have to be replaced
You may need to replace the speedometer fuse. The speedometer cable can cause your speedometer to stop working. The speed sensor can also cause the speedometer to stop working.

If it's a 1992 V6 4Runner with an automatic transmission, the three wire speed sensor for the speedometer is located on the extension housing of the transmission.
its in your owners manual, you hold down the odometer button for several seconds if i remember correctly

There is no recall for the Toyota 4runner transmission. Some Toyota's have had break problems that may have started the recall rumors on some Toyota products but, there is no recall for the Toyota 4runner transmission.
