Usually it doesn't work like that. You basically need to check why it has been overheated. If it was because of you didn't have enough of coolant than you need to add coolant and check for leakage. If it happened because of the thermostat failure, you need to replace the thermostat and then drive the car.
Other things might cause overheating too.
PS: You have to be careful when you are dealing with an overheated engine.
Your car is overheating when idle because there may be a lack of oil or water in the engine. It can also be a problem with the engine itself. If your car is overheating, simply contact a wrecker or a road assistance company. The police are also available to assist you.
You can warp the head and crack the block if you keep it running for too long while its overheating, that's only two things. Fix the problem before you blow the engine.
replace it
my car isn't steaming only in drive but not overheating.
You are probably low on coolant. You need coolant to heat the cabin and cool the engine. Add more coolant and take your vehicle to a shop to find/fix the leak.
what is the cost to fix an overheating Subaru Legacy Wagon. Is it the thermostat? How much are they to replace?
I had a ford contour that overheated a lot. Took it to several mechanics and no one could find a reason to why it was overheating. Since I couldn't fix the problem, I just kicked on the AC when it started to run too warm and that kept it at normal running temp.
fix my car
I suggest you take your car to the dealer and they might be able to fix the problem.
Depends on the car. Did you actually fix the problem or are you just hoping to turn out the light and it will fix itself?
You should not buy a car with overheating problems. This means that it will not serve the purpose and will develop other mechanical problems.
Replace the head gasket. Yep.
