In the movie, according to the supercomputer Deep Thought, the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is 42. When asked what the answer meant Deep Thought replied that in order to understand the answer you first had to ask the right question. Unfortunately, no one has ever figured out what the question was.*"The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" was a BBC radio series (which began in 1978), a book series by Douglas Adams (which began in 1979) and a motion picture (2005). "Life, the Universe, and Everything" was published in 1982, and the 2003 radio production featured a posthumous cameo appearance by Douglas Adams (1952-2001).The meaning of life is 42. The ultimate question is 'What do you get if you multiply six by nine?' which IS 42 in base 13. The ultimate question is also 'What is total paradise?' which was interpreted as 'What is the total of a pair of dice' which is, if you care to check, 42.
The question, as it appeared in the Douglas Adams book Life, the Universe, and Everything is "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?"Having discovered that the Answer to the Ultimate Question of life, the universe, and everything is "42," the search continues to discover what the actual question was. The answer to this question is of course wrong because 6 x 9 = 54 in our base 10 math. However, 6 x 9 does equal 42 in base 13, a fact disclaimed by author Adams as completely serendipitous.(see related question)

It doesn't. The mice (I forget their names) build a computer to generate the question (of life, the universe, and everything), but that computer is the earth and it's sort of destroyed by the Vogons. Why on earth do you want to know why that's the answer?^^ - only in the movie dude. In the book a spaceship full of hairdressers inhabits earth ruining the 'computer'. Aurther dent trys to find the answer using randomly picked scrabble tiles and comes up with the ultimate question to life the universe and everything as 'what is six times seven'.

The answer to the Ultimate Question of Life the Universe and Everything was first said to be 42 in Douglas Adams' scifi comedy book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. As stated in the book, the Ultimate Answer does not make sense without the Ultimate Question which, due to a series of unfortunate and astronomically unlikely events, is never discovered.
