Argus is a Dali painting in the surrealist style (also a series of Dali sketches now published) depicting a Surrealist interpretation of the Greek legend of Argos Panoptes.

Argus/Argos was a hundred-eyed giant, sent by the goddess Hera to watch over a sacred heifer. The cow was actually the nymph Io, whom Hera's husband Zeus had seduced and then transformed to escape Hera's detection. The full myth can be found at Wikipedia. Each of Argos's eyes were eventually put out, and he was killed by Hermes at Zeus's instruction.
