Argus is a Dali painting in the surrealist style (also a series of Dali sketches now published) depicting a Surrealist interpretation of the Greek legend of Argos Panoptes.
Argus/Argos was a hundred-eyed giant, sent by the goddess Hera to watch over a sacred heifer. The cow was actually the nymph Io, whom Hera's husband Zeus had seduced and then transformed to escape Hera's detection. The full myth can be found at Wikipedia. Each of Argos's eyes were eventually put out, and he was killed by Hermes at Zeus's instruction.
Zeus orders Hermes to kill Argus because Argus was guarding Io, a woman Zeus was romantically involved with. Zeus believed that by killing Argus, he could free Io from her watchful eyes and have more access to her without being caught.
Zeus' shield, the Aegis, is often depicted with the head of Argus because Argus was a giant with a hundred eyes who served as a guardian for Hera, Zeus' wife. When Argus was killed by Hermes at Zeus' command, Zeus took his eyes and placed them on his shield as a symbol of protection and power.
Athena gave Argus's eye to a peacock, and thus, that's why they have many eyes! Hope I helped.
Hermes tells a story to lull Argus to sleep, eventually causing all of his eyes to close and enabling Hermes to kill him.
The god with 100 eyes was Argus Panoptes in Greek mythology. He was a giant with 100 eyes that never closed at the same time, making him the perfect guard. Hera employed him to watch over Io, Zeus' lover. Hermes eventually lured Argus to sleep and killed him.
