The entire Apollo program cost approximately $25 billion dollars. The program was fraught with danger. Not the least of which was keeping those huge chemical rockets from exploding. Three astronauts died in a fire on Apollo I. There were also a lot of unknowns about the dangers of solar radiation. If there were a good size solar flarewhile the astronauts were traveling to the Moon they would have been fried. The program itself was a technological miracle. For example, the average laptop computertoday has more computing power than NASA's mission control did back in the 1960's.
