A well-loved and good-natured mongrel stray of calm disposition from the streets of Moscow, there is much speculation regarding Laika's ancestry. Some reports describe her as a Husky-mix or Samoyed-mix, almost certainly with strains of Spitz and Terrier in her bloodline, and it has even been suggested that one of her parents may have been a Beagle.

There was never any plan to recover Laika, and the flight system was not capable of a return to Earth. As soon as the dog was launched, that was it ... she would orbit for a while, her face would be seen on video from space, the publicity for the country that launched her would be spectacular, and she would die when the satellite de-orbited, re-entered the atmosphere, and burned up.

But even this grisly plan failed. While the satellite still maintained orbit, its oxygen and cooling systems failed, and the animal died of asphyxiation and hyperthermia ... strangled and cooked at the same time. One has to hope that the mission controllers sat there in their climate-controlled headquarters at Baikonur and watched the whole thing.

Unfortunately she died during her flight just a few hours after take off. It is believed she died of heat and stress when her thermal control system malfunctioned.

Laika (translated as "Barker") was a dog sent into space by Russia. She was the first animal to orbit the Earth and also the first animal to die in space (they had not yet figured how to return a space capsule to Earth). She was reported to have died when she ran out of oxygen, but it is theorized she died due to heat exhaustion. Russian scientists used her to study the feasibility of sending a human into space.

Laika's space shuttle went too close to the sun by mistake, the poor mutt would have been cooked. A very unpleasant death!

No. Laika died in space a few hours after lift-off and the craft Laika was in eventually was destroyed as it returned into Earth's atmosphere five months later.
