Bartholomeu Diaz is attibuted with having founded the Cape of Good Hope -- or, the "Cape of Storms," as he termed it.
He was a Portuguese explorer who discovered the "Cape Of Good Hope". But he originally named it the "Cape Of Storms", but it was renamed by John ll of Portugal. Dias never got through the "Cape Of Good Hope" though.
Diaz was a Portuguese explorer who first discovered Cape Town and named it Cape of storms on his search for the route to India in 1487 only to turn back when his men mutinied.

Those who labled it Cape of Storm were terrified of the harsh weather and rough tides. Storms wew common in the area.
Because it's a small piece of land separating two oceans, the Indian being warm and the Atlantic being cold. These two very different ocean currents create major storms and unpredictable weather conditions in the Cape Town region Hence the name "The Cape of Storms".
