A veteran of two wars, serving in three branches of the US Military in 24 years, this first American to circle the globe in space was also a winner of FIVE Distinguished Flying Crosses. His Korean War exploits in the new F9F Panther jet interceptor included 63 combat missions, which gave him the experience of coming under a lot of flak. He successfully returned to base twice with over 250 flak holes in his ship, gaining him the dubious nickname of "Magnet Butt". As a former Marine Pilot, he EARNED the nickname "Devil Dog", and in 1953 was flying a F86F that he named "MiG Mad Marine".
