Does Sirius have Gravity

Best Answer

Yes. Every object in the universe has gravity.

However, the force of gravity decreases proportionally to the SQUARE of the distance, so even though Sirius is quite large and very massive, it is also very far away - so we don't feel a bit of it.

This is why we feel the gravity of the Earth, which isn't nearly as massive as our Sun, but is right here - not 93,000,000 miles away.

Sirius is a binary solar system. It consists of two stars, Sirius A and B. B is a white dwarf and A is an A-type main sequence star. No planets have been discovered orbiting either of them, as of yet. This doesn't mean they cannot have planets, as our instruments may not be sensitive enough for the task.

What is the life and death of Sirius the star?

Sirius's fate might be peaceful; just ejecting it's outer red giant layers to make a planetary nebula. It is 2.02 times the mass of the Sun. However, Sirius has a white dwarf companion. On Sirius B's death, Sirius A might have formed. At the other end, Sirius B might destroy Sirius A. White dwarfs have very strong gravity, and if it is close enough, Sirius B might steal material from Sirius A. When a white dwarf stealing mass from the parent star has enough mass to create iron, the iron triggers a Type 1a supernova. If this happens to Sirius B, Sirius A could either be destroyed by the immense force of the explosion, or become a runaway star, travelling faster than even Barnard's Star. If this is the case, Sirius A might eat smaller stars or crash and burn into a larger star. If it heads towards us if this happens, we would be doomed.

Is sirius a star or planet?

The star Sirius is not a planet or even a single star but is in fact a binary star, or two stars that orbit each other. Together, these two stars are often called The Dog Star, as they are the brightest object in the constellation Canis Major - or The Big Dog. The stars, named Sirius A and Sirius B, orbit each other about 20 Astronomical Units (the distance from the Sun to the planet Uranus) that takes about 50 years to complete on orbit. Right now, they appear to be moving away from each other and will reach their maximum separation on the year 2019. At a distance of roughly 8.6 light years, the Sirius binary star system is actually relatively close to us. Sirius A (the larger of the two binary stars) is also extraordinarily bright, about 25 time brighter than our sun. These two factors make Sirius one of the top ten brightest stars in our night sky. While Sirius A is very large and bright, Sirius B (the smaller of the two binary stars) is significantly smaller than it's companion - about the size of our Earth. But even at it's small size, Sirius B still has nearly the same mass as our Sun. That much mass in such a tiny space means more surface gravity (about twice that of Sirius A) and more heat (about 2.5 times that of Sirius A). Just because it's small, doesn't mean it's not awesome. Sirius is considered a wintertime star, usually only seen between the months of December and March. It is part of the Winter Triangle asterism along with Betelgeuse and Procyon. So if you're in the Northern Hemisphere and the weather begins to turn cold, take a look into the southern night sky and find Sirius, The Dog Star!

Where is Sirius b located in the night sky?

Sirius, which consists of both Sirius A and Sirius B is in the constellation Canis Major, which, if you are looking south, appears below and to the left of Orion. Sirius B itself is too dim to be seen from Earth; the vast majority of the light from Sirius is from Sirius A. Even then, as a binary system, the two stars are too close together for us to see them separately.
