It doesn't. The molten core of the moon has long since cooled off and solidified.

The moon appears to change its shape depending where it is relative to the sun and the earth. For example, a new moon (completely dark) occurs when the sun is shining on the other side of the moon. The crescent moon appears one week later as the moon travels round the earth and we see a little bit of the illuminated side.
