the poet compares her mother with a late winter's moon. winters are symbolic of an end of cycle( the end of the year) and here it symbolizes the end of life. just like a late winter's moon lacks warmth, brightness, the poet's mother too lacks strength as she was sleeping motionless in the car, brightness as she is pale and she's old and aging. so the cold, dim moon is symbolizing death.

No. The orbit of the Moon about the Earth does not lie exactly in the plane of the Earth's orbit about the Sun, so most of the time the Moon goes a little "over" or "under" the point at which it would be directly in line with the Sun.

When the sun moon and earth are all in line tides?

When the moon is either 180 degrees from the sun, or aligned with it. That is, if you could draw a straight line from the sun to the earth and out into space beyond, if the moon lands anywhere on that line, you have spring tides. In that alignment, you'll have either a new moon or a full moon.

What is it when the moon and earth are exactly in line?

The moon and earth are always exactly in line; any two points define a line. When the earth moon and sun are all exactly in line, that is different. When this happens it is either a solar eclipse or it is a lunar eclipse.
