Among other things, Apollo 8 proved that the things that were said by astronauts on board the spacecraft could have implications back on Earth. NASA was actually sued over the Apollo 8 mission because the crew read from The Bible while in orbit around the moon. This angered activist groups who sued over a government agency participating in prayer, violating the separation of church and state. From this mission forward NASA and the Apollo crew were much more aware of the size of their audience and were more careful in what they said over the air.
