With the exception of mankind, we are only told what God made, not how He made it. That fact is in order to stress mankind's importance.

To make man, God fashioned the appropriate shape from dirt and breathed a soul into it (Genesis ch.2). He then made the first woman by fashioning her from a piece of the man's flesh (ibid).

Day by day, God created the universe and its contents (Genesis ch.1).God created the universe out of nothing (Exodus 20:11, Isaiah 40:28; Rashi commentary to Genesis 1:14; Maimonides' "Guide," 2:30).Note that the Torah, in describing the Creation, deliberately employs brevity and ellipsis, just as it does in many other topics. • On day 1: God created the universe in general, light, and this Earth. The light was not the same as that of the sun. Rather, it was light that God created before the sun, and which emanated from a point in space without any physical source; like what we might term a "white hole."
  
• On day 2: God created the separation between the Earth and the upper atmosphere.
  
• On day 3: God separated the continents from the oceans, and created plants.
  
• On day 4: God created the sun, moon, and stars.
  
• On day 5: God created birds and fish.
  
• On day 6: God created animals and people.

From a Judeo-Christian religious point of view, most people would say that The Bible tells us that God created everything: "In the beginning God created heaven and earth." But as long ago as the eleventh century CE, the influential Jewish scholar, Rashi, said that Genesis 1:1 should really be read, "When God began to create" or "In the beginning of God's creation ". E.A. Speiser, in Genesis (Anchor Bible series), goes further and translates the sentence as: "When God set about to create heaven and earth - the world being a formless waste, with darkness over the seas... God said, 'Let there be light.' And there was light." The creation account in Genesis 1:1 to 2:4a ( up to first sentence of 2:4) says there was a pre-existing watery chaos. The ocean was already present and a wind moved across the surface. The seas already rested on the dry land, which appeared on day 3 when God gathered the waters together. So there is no suggestion here that God actually created the world. In this story he did, however, create the sun, moon and stars as lights in the firmament just above the earth.

Some realise there is a separate, independent creation account in Genesis 2:4b-2:20. But even here, there was pre-existing dry land, and nothing grew because God had yet to make it rain. The first thing he created was the man, Adam. In this story, God could not create something out of nothing, because he needed dirt to create Adam, and a rib to create Eve. There is certainly no suggestion that God actually created the earth.

If the Bible, even when read carefully and literally tells us nothing about how the world was created, we must turn to science. Science tells us that creation began with the "Big Bang" that created the universe out of nothing. Only later was the sun created, and later still the earth. Far from being a light in the firmament just above the earth, the sun is a huge and distant furnace that warms our earth and all the other planets. The stars are each the equivalent of another sun, but almost infinitely far away.

Long after the sun and other stars were created, it was the turn for our earth, the moon and the planets to be created. A dying giant star in our neighbourhood exploded as a supernova that sent huge quantities of heavy elements out into the galaxy. A very small proportion of this material was captured by the sun's gravity and formed a cloud around the sun. Thus coalesced into planets, moons and so on, some four and a half billion years ago. All that was needed now was for life to evolve.
