Astronauts ride rockets. The space shuttle has a huge liquid fuel booster, along side which two solid rocket motors are attached. This entire assembly blasts off, consuming almost all the fuel. Only a little bit is left in the shuttle itself for deorbit burns and attitude control.

Cosmonauts--russian astronauts--boost into space in their Soyuz spacecraft, which is attached to the top of a big rocket.

Chinese astronauts are called "taikonauts," which is probably a better word than either astronaut or cosmonaut. Taikonaut could be translated "space sailor," whereas "astro" means "star." Astronauts do not travel between the stars, yet.
