How do you know if a crescent moon is a waxing or waning?

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere (more specifically north of the zenith), the "horns" of the waxing crescent moon will point to the left and the horns of the waning crescent will point to the right.

In the Southern Hemisphere (south of the zenith), the horns on the waxing crescent moon will point to the right and the horns of the waning crescent will point to the left.

Near the equator, it can be difficult to distinguish waxing and waning phases - since the moon is always close to overhead and constantly moves north and south every lunar month, but in general a waxing crescent moon will look like a smile in the western evening sky and a waning crescent will look like a smile in the eastern morning sky.
