The orbiter is lifted by a crane and mounted to the back of the 747 using the same mount points the orbiter is mounted to the external fuel tank for launch. Upon arriving at the Kennedy Space Center, a similar crane lifts the orbiter off the 747 which then backs out from under the orbiter.
