A pilot signals the crew from a hot air balloon primarily using visual cues, such as waving their arms or using flags. They may also use handheld radios for communication if available. In some cases, the pilot might employ a whistle or other sound-making devices to attract attention. These signals help coordinate actions during landing or other critical phases of the flight.
A hot air balloon pilot is called an aeronaut.
Typically, it takes at least two people to fly a hot air balloon: a pilot to control the balloon and a crew member to assist with preparation, landing, and navigation. Some larger, more complex hot air balloons may require additional crew members.
A balloon pilot controls ascent by heating the air inside the balloon with a burner and descent by allowing the air to cool or venting it.
The pilot maneuvers a hot air balloon primarily by controlling the altitude through the use of a burner to heat the air inside the envelope, causing it to rise, or by allowing the air to cool, which makes the balloon descend. Horizontal movement is achieved by changing altitude to catch different wind currents, as the balloon has no steering mechanism. The pilot can navigate by ascending or descending to find favorable winds, guiding the balloon toward the desired direction. Communication with ground crew and using visual landmarks also aid in navigation.
The person who controls a hot air balloon is called a pilot or a balloonist. They are responsible for navigating the balloon safely through the air by controlling the burner and the airflow in the balloon envelope.

my mom used to crew on hot air balloons (sometimes on the Disney mickey mouse ballon) and all i remember them called are pilot, co pilot, crew chief, crew , and ground crew, and ballonists as a whole - but it does seem to me i have heard somewhere in the distant past a special term for ballon pilots, i think a french term, but i cant recall what it was
Hot Air Balloon Pilot

An aeronaut flies a hot air balloon

Horizontal movement is achieved by changing altitude to catch different wind currents, as the balloon has no steering mechanism. Heating the air in the balloon makes it less dense than the surrounding air, causing the balloon to become buoyant and rise. As the air inside the balloon cools, it becomes denser and the balloon descends. This process allows the pilot to control the altitude of the balloon.
A hot air balloon is typically piloted by a trained and licensed hot air balloon pilot who is responsible for navigating the balloon, controlling its altitude, and ensuring the safety of passengers on board.
The pilot is just 'the pilot'
A hot air balloon pilot ascends by heating the air inside the envelope using a burner, which makes the air less dense than the cooler air outside, causing the balloon to rise. To descend, the pilot can either allow the air to cool naturally or use a vent at the top of the envelope to release some hot air, increasing the balloon's density and causing it to descend. The pilot controls both ascent and descent by carefully managing the temperature of the air inside the balloon.
