The sun radiates energy in the visible, infra-red, and ultra-violet areas of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. In fact the sun acts as a black body would do at about 6000 degC. On earth the infra-red radiation we receive accounts for most of the heating which keeps the earth and its atmosphere at temperatures we can live in. There is a constant interchange going on, we receive energy but also re-emit energy so that over a period our temperature remains in balance.
