there are several types of space in drama. but mainly it represents emotion between the characters or of the characters. it sets the scene sometimes without the drama needing a spoken introduction/history of the characters.

It can show an emotion of a character, for example if the character seperates themselves from a group, or if they clearly put themselves in a free area. this can show inner conflicts of the character or conflicts between other characters. empty spaces reprensent conflicts or aloneness, full spaces can show conflicts again, (too many, if the character cant find a way to go)
and ( i cant remember the correct name for it but, ) the space between characetrs. this space shows the relationship between characters, is there space between them or are they close and comfortable with each other?
a space in speech, awkwardness or comfortanleness (this all depends on how the characters themselves are spaced and their relationship) its like having sitting next to a weird guy on the bus, the silence between you is awkward, compared to sitting next to a good friend on the bus.
