The temperature on the International Space Station (ISS) can be as high as 121 C and as low as -157 C. To tackle this, the ISS has Multi Layer Insulation (MLI). The reflective silver layer is aluminized Mylar. The copper-colored material is kapton, this is a heavier layer that protects the sheets of fragile Mylar. Mylar is aluminized so that solar thermal radiation can't get through it. Hot air that doesn't rise, heat doesn't conduct, radiators too cold for liquid water. But thanks to the Station's efficient integrated thermal control systems, the crew don't have to worry about staying cool on the ISS.

What is the record stay on the International Space Station?

The record for the longest stay on the International Space Station is held by a Russian cosmonaut. Sergei Avdeyev earned the record by staying aboard for just over 747 days.

The Space Station is different than a space shuttle and a space probe but how?

The International Space Station was assembled in space and is designed to stay there. It is meant as a place of research and as a place for astronauts to stay in space. A space shuttle is a vehicle that can lauch from Earth into space and then return, something a space station cannot do. Space shuttles transport people and equipment to and from space.

Who lives in the ISS?

Astronauts from various countries live and work onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The crew typically consists of six astronauts at a time, who stay on the ISS for missions that usually last about six months.

How will you make sure you will stay in bed while sleeping if there is no gravity?

You will tie your shoelaces to the bedpost, or, as astronauts do in the International Space Station, strap yourself to the bed.

How long are people on the ISS for?

Typical missions to the International Space Station (ISS) last around six months. Some astronauts may stay for shorter durations, like a few weeks or a few months, while others participate in longer missions lasting up to a year.

How long do astronauts stay in space station?

It takes around 5-7 years for someone to become an astronaut. And this is after they already have college degrees and engineering or science experience.

How much would it cost to build a space station to live in outer space?

The cost to build a space station can vary widely depending on factors such as its size, complexity, technology used, and duration of stay. For example, the International Space Station (ISS) cost around $150 billion to construct and has been continuously inhabited since 2000. Future space stations, such as those planned for deep space exploration or commercial purposes, could have different cost estimates.

How does the ISS stay cool?

The International Space Station (ISS) stays cool through a combination of passive and active thermal control systems. It uses radiators that dissipate heat generated by onboard equipment and the crew, releasing it into space. Additionally, the ISS is equipped with insulated materials and thermal blankets that help maintain optimal temperatures. The use of ammonia as a coolant in the thermal management system also plays a crucial role in regulating the station's temperature.

How long do astronauts stay on the International Space Station for?

Astronauts typically stay on the International Space Station (ISS) for about six months during their missions, although some may stay for shorter or longer durations depending on specific mission requirements. Extended stays can last up to a year or more, as seen in certain research missions. The duration is carefully planned to allow for optimal scientific research and to ensure the well-being of the crew.

How many days astronauts can stay in space station?

Astronauts can typically stay on the International Space Station (ISS) for about six months, although some missions have lasted up to a year. The exact duration can vary based on the specific mission, crew health, and the spacecraft used for transport. NASA and other space agencies monitor the astronauts' physical and psychological well-being to determine the optimal length of stay.
