Both the planet Mercury and the element Mercury are named after the Roman god Mercury. In the case of the planet, the god Mercury was a messenger and traveled very quickly, just as Mercury orbits the sun faster that any other planet. Also, it was the custom to name the planets after Roman gods. (Venus, Mars, Neptune, and Jupiter are also named after some of the common Roman gods and goddesses.) In the case of the metal, it was named because it was considered to show some of the qualities of the god Mercury. He was considered untrustworthy and unreliable (as the god of thieves), and it was seen as an appropriate name because, as the only metal liquid at room temperature (and one of the two elements liquid at room temperature), mercury shows some surprising qualities.
