A protostar is a star in its early stages of formation. These can exist almost anywhere in the galaxy, and so the fact that a protostar is identified in and of itself is not enough information to define how far away it is from our sun. Protostars can be aged, however, based on their luminescence and size, which is determined based on the wavelength of energy being emitted from their core.
