The New crescent Moon can be seen right after sunset. It typically does not take long for it to appear.
Full moon.
When the moon is full, it will just be rising in the east as sunset. The full moon is exactly opposite the position of the sun.
One is Crescent (waxing), the other is Crescent (waning).

Only one. New moon is the phase where the sun is completely dark, and crescent is the phase where only a sliver (or crescent) is showing. The night after a new moon, part of the moon will be illuminated, and it will be a crescent.
Full moon.
Sometimes the dark part of the moon is illuminated by the reflection of sunlight off the Earth. It is called Earthshine. Check this site http://home.hiwaay.net/~krcool/Astro/moon/earthshine/

It's the waxing crescent or new crescent.
The new moon comes after the crescent moon
Look low in the western sky just after sunset; the Moon you will see there will be a waxing crescent moon. The prettiest phase of the Moon, in my personal opinion, is the 1 or 2 day old crescent sometimes called "Diana's Bow".
In Judaism and Messianic Christianity, the crescent or sliver moon (the first small slice of the moon seen after sunset after what science calls the new moon-no moon) marks the first day of the month according to the biblical calender which is lunar based.
A waning crescent is followed by a New Moon. The New Moon being followed by a waxing crescent.
When the crescent has waned all it can, we get a New Moon next.
Waxing crescent.
