A good long way - about 25,000 light years or so, and thank goodness for that! There is, we believe, a super-massive black hole at the center of the Milky way (and probably at the centers of most large galaxies) and it would be very unhealthy to be anywhere near it.

How long does it take for a burst of light from the near center of the Milky Way to reach planet earth?

The Solar System (which includes Earth) is at a distance of about 27,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way; since this distance won't change significantly over time, that means it will take about 27,000 years.

How long would it take to get to the centre of the earths Milky way galaxy?

It would take approximately 25,000 light-years to travel from Earth to the center of the Milky Way galaxy at the speed of light. This journey is not currently possible with our current technology as it would require significantly advanced propulsion systems and energy sources.

What is least distance we would have to travel from our solar system to reach the outer edge of the Milky Way?

Approximately 24 thousand light years or 2.27E17 kilometers (227,000,000,000,000,000 kilometers).

How many galaxies like our own would it take if they were placed edge to edge to reach the nearest galaxy?

Less than one. * The Milky Way (our galaxy) has a diameter of about 100,000 light-years. * According to the Wikipedia, the Canis Major galaxy is at a distance of 25,000 light-years from our Solar System. However, its status as a galaxy is disputed (in other words, it may not be a galaxy). * On the other hand, the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy is at a distance of about 70,000 light-years from the Solar System - still less than the diameter of our galaxy. Note that the distances given are from our Solar System; NOT from the center of our Milky Way.

How long does it take light from the center of the sun to reach earth?

81/3 minutes from the sun's surface, but possibly thousands of yearsto reach the sun's surface from its center.

How many miles is the Milky Way from earth?

None, actually; reach down and touch the Earth, and you are touching part of the Milky Way. We are part of the Milky Way.

Is the milky way galaxy located 2.2 million light years from the sun?

No. Reach up and pinch your nose; that's part of the Milky Way you are pinching! We - each and every one of us here on Planet Earth - are as much a part of the Milky Way as one of your hairs is part of YOU. We're part of the Earth; the Earth is part of our solar system. This solar system, and every individual star you can see in the sky, are part of the Milky Way.

Is the milky way big or small?

Depends on what you define as "big" or "small"... The nearest star from our Solar System, Toliman (Alpha Centauri), is 4 light-years away. This is already an incredible distance, by our standards; each light-year has almost 10 million million kilometers. It would take our current spacecraft thousands of years to reach there. The diameter of our galaxy (the Milky Way), however, is about 100,000 light-years - about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 km., 10 to the power 18.

How long would it take to get to the end of your milky way galaxy at the speed of light?

The Milky Way has a diameter of about 100,000 light-years, meaning it takes 100,000 years to get across at the speed of light. We are about 30,000 km from the center, meaning that it can take us 20,000 - 80,000 years to get to the edge of our Milky Way, depending on the direction we choose. However, as described by Einstein and Lorentz, time dilation would make you, the observer, think it took zero time to reach your destination, because your internal time reference would slow down as you approach the speed of light, stopping right at the speed of light.

How does the solar system compare in size to the Milky Way?

The Milky Way is estimated to consist of 200 billion to 400 billion stars. The sun isone of them. It takes the sun's light about 8 minutes to reach Earth, and about4.3 years to reach the next nearest star out of 200 - 400 billion of them.If that doesn't strike you speechless at the incomprehensible enormity of it all, then you need to check your pulse.

How long will it take for the Milky Way galaxy to reach The Great Attractor?

The Milky Way galaxy will never reach the "Great Atttractor".

How close is the sun to the Milky Way galaxy?

Hi! The milky way is "our" galaxy. The sun is inside it. All the stars you see are in our galaxy. The nearest stars are at a distance that takes light about 4 years to reach us from them.
