The Mercury missions were the first manned missions by the US into space. In a series of sub-orbital and orbital flights, they investigated the effects on humans of space travel and explored many of the unknown orbital and engineering mechanics. The first American in space, Alan Shepard, and the first American to orbit the earth, John Glenn, were the most visible accomplishments of the project. They were followed by the Gemini missions, the curtain raiser to the Apollo moon landings.

The first American space missions were called Mercury missions. These missions aimed to put astronauts into space, gather data on human spaceflight, and pave the way for more ambitious missions. The Mercury program ran from 1960 to 1963.
There were six manned Mercury missions, between 1961 and 1963, which were part of the United States' first human spaceflight program. These missions aimed to prove human spaceflight was possible and lay the foundation for future space missions.
All of the Mercury missions ended (as did all missions prior to the Shuttle Program) via capsule splashdown and recovery by a Navy carrier in the Pacific Ocean.
There have been no human space missions to Mars. The only missions to Mars to date have been through flybys with space craft, orbiters, and land rovers.
Mercury has only been explored by space probes, specifically Mariner 10 in 1973, and MESSENGER in 2004. Unrelated to the planet are the Mercury spy satellite program of the 1990s, and the 1959-1963 human spaceflight program Project Mercury.
