Between 1968 and 1972, there were 9 manned missions to the Moon by the US, part of the NASA program called Apollo. Three of the missions went to the Moon and back without landing there : Apollo 8, Apollo 10, and Apollo13.

A total of 24 astronauts have been to the Moon, but only 12 walked on the surface. In each of the 6 landings, one astronaut from the three-man crew stayed in the command module while the others travelled in the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) to the surface and back.

These missions studied the Moon extensively, and brought back many samples of lunar rocks from various areas.

Despite the successes of the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, no person has been to the Moon since 1972, and the projects to return there are not funded in NASA's current budget.
