Tornadoes have been happening from the beginning from our planet's birth. Since then we have not been able to record the amount because there were no intelligent human life, no recorded written language, and there were tornadoes in areas with no inhabitants. We do not have the exact number of tornadoes that have occurred on this planet. Yet we do have the number of tornadoes average per year in different countries.

How many tornadoes does the world have each year?

That is not known. Official statistics say there are about 2,000 tornadoes in the world per year, but the actual number of tornadoes is probably much higher. Many countries do not keep record of their tornadoes and so only ones that cause major damage become known. Many tornadoes that occur in unpopulated areas go unnoticed.

Where were tornadoes found in the last five years?

There have been at least 6,717 confirmed tornadoes in the U.S. in the past 5 years. This number may actually be higher as the figures for April through June of 2011 are still preliminary. Statistics world wide are not available as many countries to not keep records of their tornadoes, but tornadoes, some of them deadly, have occurred in almost all parts of the world and on every continent except Antarctica.

How many tornadoes can form at 1 time?

Multiple tornadoes can form at the same time during a severe weather event, especially in outbreaks or supercell thunderstorms. The exact number of tornadoes that can form simultaneously can vary, but it is not uncommon for several tornadoes to be observed in the same area or region at once.

How many tornadoes in 1900?

The number of tornadoes in 1900 is not known. Official records for the United States only go back to 1950, and the vast majority of tornadoes were missed. Work by tornado expert Thomas P. Grazulis indicates that there were at least 51 significant tornadoes (F2 or stronger or causing a death) in the U.S. in 1900. However, most tornadoes are not rated as significant, and many F2 tornadoes may still have been missed.
