Many students choose to get a job while they are enrolled in college. Some students find themselves needing to work to help pay for their college and living expenses. However, not all students can work and go to school at the same time, and still pass their classes. If you are currently in college and youre thinking about getting a job, their a few things that you should know before you begin your job search.

Review Your Schedule

Take a moment to review your daily schedule to determine how much time you can actually devote to a job. If your schedule is already hectic, and you have numerous personal obligations to attend to (e.g. family, church, social organizations, etc.), chances are you will not be able to hold down a job while you are enrolled in college. Keep in mind that if you do have a busy schedule, you can try to eliminate a few obligations before you begin working.

Find a Part-Time Job

Instead of working full-time, perhaps you can locate a part-time job (less than 20 hours a week). Many employers offer part-time jobs for college students, such as fast food restaurants, retail stores and tutoring centers. You can also do other jobs like babysit kids, run errands for family and friends, mow lawns, or get a paper delivery route to bring in some extra money.

Apply for Financial AidIf you are unable to work while you attend college, consider applying for financial aid. Nearly all colleges and universities offer some type of financial aid for students who demonstrate a need for it. Financial aid comes in the form of federal grants, loans and scholarships. In addition, the financial aid program also offers a federal work-study program that pays students to work in an approved position either on or off campus. You can speak with a financial aid counselor at your school to learn about the application process. You may also visit the official FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) website for more information on your financial aid options. Simply go to www.fafsa.ed.gov, for more information about the federal financial aid program. Other Things to Consider
  • Only get a job if you really need to work.
  • Try to find a job that offers flexibility.
  • Be sure to update your resume before you search and apply for jobs.
  • Prepare a list of professional references to include on your Job Applications (e.g. current or former supervisors or co-workers, college professors, academic counselors, coaches, etc.)
  • Check with your schools job placement center to inquire about job openings.

It is up to you whether you choose to work while you attend college. Keep in mind that it is important to keep a well-balanced schedule, so you will not fall behind on any of your obligations.
