In Earth orbit, the two boxes wil not weigh anything because the space station and its contents are in free fall (NOT because there is no gravity).

This means you can not use the weight of the contents to discriminate between the boxes. However the mass of the contents is still the same and a property of mass is inertia(the energy required to get the box to move and to stop it once it is moving).

Thus the contents can be discerned by placing the boxes side in the air of the cabin and giving them a gentle push. The one filled with feathers will move faster than the one filled with sand for the same effort of push.

DO NOT open the boxes because if you do sand and feathers will get out and start floating round inside the cabin.

How do you raise the height of the space station without the shuttle?

The International Space Station is raised using thrusters on board or by visiting spacecraft. These thrusters propel the station to higher orbits by changing its speed and altitude. Additionally, the station can also be raised by docked spacecraft applying thrust in the opposite direction of the station's movement to gradually increase its altitude.

Could you survive in outer space without a space suit?

I could survive in outer space without a space suit, as long as I was inside a space ship, or space station. I cannot breathe vacuum.

What happens during a space walk does the International Space Station stop or it continues at the same speed?

The space station continues at the same speed. The spacewalker will also travel at the same speed. Their relative speed however will be near zero however because they are travelling together. In effect their is no real way for a spacecraft to speed up or slow down without changing its orbit.

What would happen if the space station stop moving sideways?

If the space station were to stop moving sideways, it would continue to orbit Earth due to the pull of gravity. However, without the horizontal velocity, it would fall back towards Earth rather than staying in a stable orbit. This would pose a significant danger to the crew and the station itself.

How does the international space station move?

The International Space Station (ISS) orbits Earth at a speed of about 28,000 kilometers per hour. This high speed allows it to stay in orbit and continuously fall towards Earth without actually hitting the planet. The motion of the ISS is maintained by the balance between its forward velocity and the gravitational pull of Earth.

In the orbiting space shuttle you are handed two identical closed boxes one filled with sand and the other filled with feathers How can you tell which is which without opening the boxes?

In order to find out which box contains the sand, you hold the box in your hands, while you stand with your back against the wall. Next you would try to push the box away from your body. If the box id difficult to push away from your body then it must contain the sand. We know this because sand has more inertia than feathers!
