Alan Shepard was the second person and the first American to go into space. He did so May 5, 1961. He flew into space again in 1971, commanding the Apollo 14 mission to the moon (January 31-February 9, 1971).
Astronaut is the US term for a person who goes into space.
Alan B Shepard was the first American to fly in space onboard Freedom 7 on May 5th 1961.
He flew in space on 5/5/1961. It was a sub orbit flight.
Alan Shepard and his crew was supposed to fly Apollo 13, but he got an ear infection close to the launch, so the crew of Apollo 14 were moved up a place allowing Alan Shepard to fly Apollo 14. The reason the whole crew switched was because they trained with each other and were put together to compliment each others skills.
The first NASA astronaut to reach space was Alan Shepard, on May 5, 1961, only 23 days after cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man to orbit the Earth. The seven original Mercury Program astronauts, chosen in no particular order, were Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Deke Slayton (who did not fly in one of the six Mercury missions for health reasons).

Mercury-Redstone 3, also known as Freedom 7, was launched by NASA on May 5, 1961. The mission lasted just 15 minutes 22 seconds, and Alan Shepard was the only person on the flight.
The Mercury capsule went to space in 1961. Although the Soviets had put a person in space first, Alan Shepard was the first American to fly the Mercury capsule in space.
On May 5, 1962, Alan Shepard became the first American to fly in space aboard Freedom 7.

Alan Shepard was diagnosed with Ménière's disease in the late 1960s, which affected his ability to fly as an astronaut. He underwent surgery to treat the condition in 1969 and was able to return to spaceflight in 1971.
Alan B. Shepard, Jr. became the first American astronaut to fly in space on May 5, 1961, in a Mercury capsule named Freedom 7 which was launched from a Redstone rocket.
Ham went into space on January 31, 1961 on a sub-orbital mission that lasted 16 minutes and 39 seconds. Alan Shepard, the first American astronaut to fly in space flew his mission on May 5, 1961. Shepard's flight was almost an exact copy of Ham's albeit a minute shorter. NASA had planned to send up another chimp before the Shepard flight, but when Yuri Gagarin became the first person to fly in space, NASA decided to send Shepard up without the benefit of another test flight. The purpose of Ham's flight was to test the hardware and make sure it was ready for a man to fly into space. Ham's space capsule lost pressure during the flight. He was saved by his spacesuit. That was just one of the problems experienced on Ham's flight that had to be corrected before Shepard could fly.
The first American to orbit the earth was astronaut John Glenn, the name of the spacecraft was a Mercury spacecraft. But it was called The Friendship 7.As there were 7 astronauts chosen in the first batch of astronauts.
