As to answer to Emdrgreg's additional question in the comment section. Yes! The moon is technically moving west to east! That is, if the Earth did not rotate on its axis and remained stationary. But we all know our dear planet does rotate, and since the Earth rotates faster than the orbit of the moon, we continually pass it. So, even though it appears that a counter-clockwise orbit would imply the moon moving from west to east, from an earth observer's point of view, the moon will still rise east and set west. Great additional comment, stumped me for a minute. Hope that clears things up. If not try to draw it on paper, always helps me visualize it.

Background stars though move in eccentric orbits around the galatic centre of our galaxy. the centre of our galaxy is a black hole near star sirius. All stars except few moves in anti clock wise sense.

But because as seen from earth the motion of stars appears stationary relative to moon which changes position faster in respect of angular displacement, thus direction of moon with respect to backgound stars is same as direction of motion of moon around earth that is counter clock wise motion.

This is one of the best questions to highlight the difference between true motion and apparent motion. The moon orbits the earth (the moon's true motion) from west to east; it moves anti-clockwise when observed from the north. The reason its apparent motion (rising in the east and setting in the west) is different is because of the spin of the earth, which is much more rapid than the orbit of the moon.

If you observe carefully, you will see that the moon rises later on a given night than it did the night before. This is because it advances in its west-to-east orbit during the course of the entire day, before the next moon-rise.

The stars DO actually move, but they are so far away that it would take several lifetimes for anyone to notice the change.

What we see as the Sun, Moon, planets and stars appearing to rise in the east and set in the west is entirely caused by the fact that the Earth itself is spinning like a carousel, and we're riding one of the horses. So when you see the Sun rising, what's really happening is that your spot on the Earth is spinning around toward the Sun. When you see the Sun set, it's your spot on the Earth turning AWAY from the Sun.
