There are three people permanently on the station, the crew that rotates out periodically. The International Space Station (ISS) can accommodate a crew of up to six astronauts at a time. However, during crew changeovers or special missions, it can temporarily host up to ten people. The station's design allows for living and working space for these crew members, including sleeping quarters, a galley, and laboratory areas.
There are two space stations: the International Space Station, jointly operated by the US and Russia and the Chinese Space Station Tiangong-1. Prior to the Chinese Space Station being launched in 2011, there was only the International Space Station for a period of time. There used to be two space stations before the International Space station when the Russians had the Mir space station, and the US has Skylab. Both of the latter have since fallen back to earth and mostly destroyed upon re-entry.

The Space Station Mir was launched in 1986 by the USSR. Mir was the first modular space station, meaning it was the first space station to be constructed in orbit from separate modules. Construction of Mir was completed in 1996. In 2001, Mir was purposefully deorbited. Mir re-entered the Earth's atmosphere and was destroyed over the Pacific ocean. Mir holds the record for the longest continuous manned presence, at only 8 days short of ten years, and was operated for a total length of twelve and a half years of its fifteen year lifespan.
