The atmosphere protects living things from a lot of things. Some of these include keeping temperatures from being too hot or cold, being burned severely by the sun, and keeping oxygen in so that we can breathe.

The Ozone layer protects living things on earth from UV radiation from the sun. Without it would be increased occurances of sunburn and skin cancer because ozone filters out UV-B and UV-C radiation which can cause severe sunburn and genetic damage (aka skin cancer.) The primary radiation that gets through is UV-A but although this leads to sunburn and skin cancer it is much less harmful.
The ozone layer protects us from ultra violet rays
Harmful UV rays coming from the sun
The gas in the atmosphere that protects life from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation is ozone (O3). The ozone layer is located in the stratosphere and acts as a shield, absorbing most of the UV radiation and preventing it from reaching the Earth's surface. Without ozone, excessive UV radiation would have damaging effects on living organisms.
Ozone (O3) is a gas that occurs in two layers of the atmosphere, the stratosphere and the troposphere. The stratospheric or "good" ozone layer, which extends upward from about 10 to 30 miles above the earth's surface, protects life on earth from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays (UV-b). However, ozone found in the troposphere, the layer of the atmosphere that extends from the earth's surface to about 10 miles up, is deemed ground level or "bad" ozone. At ground level, ozone is an air pollutant that damages human health, vegetation, many common materials, and is a key ingredient of smog.
The most important fact about stratosphere is that this is where the ozone layer is located. The ozone layer absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation that comes from the sun, thereby helping to protect life here on Earth.
The ozone layer. It absorbs 97-99% of potentiallly harmful ultraviolet radiation, protceting life on earth from this dangerous high frequency light from the sun.
No atmosphere, therefore no oxygen, therefore no protective ozone layer for life to survive.

The gases that destroy the ozone layer which protects the earth are various. CFC is one.
