No. Yuri Gagarin, a citizen of the USSR, preceded him.
he didn't. He was the first American to orbit the earth. i think like 1961. i know it was early 1960's.

John Glen was the first American to orbit the Earth in a spacecraft. He did so after (1) , Yuri Gargin (a Russian) orbited the Earth, and (2) after Alan Shepard and (3) Gus Grissom, (two Americans) made a suborbital flight. John Glen was the fourth human being to go into space, the second to orbit, and the first American to orbit the Earth in a space capsule.
John Glenn went into space on February 20, 1962, as the first American to orbit the Earth in the Friendship 7 spacecraft.
John Glenn orbited the Earth in the Friendship 7 spacecraft on February 20, 1962. He became the first American to orbit the Earth during this mission, which lasted nearly five hours, orbiting the Earth three times before returning safely to Earth.

Yuri Gagarin - USSR, 1961Yuri Gagarin, a Russian, orbited the Earth in 1961. Alan Shepard, an American next had a sub orbital flight, as did Gus Grissiom, another American . Then came John Glen, the first American to orbit the Earth.

Born July 18, 1921, Glenn was 40 years old when he became the first American to orbit the Earth, on February 20, 1962.
Yuri Gagarin of the USSR and Alan Shepard of the US, though his was a sub-orbital flight. John Glen was the first US astronaut to match Gagarin and orbit the Earth.
The first US man in space was John Glen in Friendship 7. He orbitted the earth in space but never went out into space. But the first man technically considered to be put in space by the US was Alan Shepard aboard the Freedom 7 on a sub-orbital flight. Hope this helps.
Yuri Gagarin was a cosmonaut for the Soviet Union. On April 12, 1961, he became the first human being to travel into space. His spacecraft was called "Vostok I" and it completed a single orbit of the earth in 1 hour and 48 minutes. Yuri Gagarin was aboard but not piloting Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961. While he launched with the capsule, he did not land with it, as the Soviets did not believe that the landing system (landing on land, not water) was sufficient to assure Gagarin's survival. He ejected at 7 km above the ground and landed via parachute. This was technically a departure from the usual international definition of an orbital spaceflight. However, since Gagarin achieved orbit while Alan Shepard (first American in space) did not, the point of which country was first to orbit is moot. Vostok 2 with Gherman Titov aboard completed 17 orbits in August 1961, long before John Glenn's three-orbit flight in February, 1962.
