The Mars Express is a robotic spacecraft launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2003, primarily designed to explore Mars and its atmosphere. Its mission includes studying the planet's geology, climate, and surface features, as well as searching for signs of water and potential past life. Additionally, it aims to investigate Mars' moons, Phobos and Deimos, and to provide valuable data for future missions to the planet. The spacecraft has significantly contributed to our understanding of Martian history and characteristics.
The Soviet Union's "Mars 2" had a "Prop-M"rover on board the lander but the mission failed when the lander impacted into the Martian surface .
A Martian Odyssey was created in 1934-07.
Mariner 9 took on that spacecraft's mission of mapping 70 percent of the Martian surface in addition to its own objective of studying changes over time in the Martian atmosphere and surface.
NASA's Viking Mission to Mars was composed of two spacecraft, Viking 1 and Viking 2, each consisting of an orbiter and a lander. The primary mission objectives were to obtain high resolution images of the Martian surface, characterize the structure and composition of the atmosphere and surface, and search for evidence of life. Viking 1 was launched on August 20, 1975 and arrived at Mars on June 19, 1976.
In 2006, the New Horizons spacecraft was launched by NASA on a mission to study Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Also, the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a "dwarf planet." Additionally, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter began its mission to study the Martian surface in more detail.
This is Mars Express and it is still operating today (July 2010). Part of the Mars Express mission was releasing the UK's Beagle 2 lander (essentially a mission in its own right), however this failed.
Oppertunity's missions are to discover new martian rocks, map mars' surface, and to help scientists learn about martian weather.
The unsuccessful British martian probe was named Beagle 2. It was launched aboard the European Space Agency's Mars Express mission in 2003 but contact was lost during its descent to the Martian surface.

Some important missions to Mars include the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission, which aims to search for signs of past life and collect samples for return to Earth, and the Emirates Mars Mission by the UAE, which focuses on studying the Martian atmosphere. Additionally, the upcoming Mars Sample Return mission by NASA and ESA will work to bring samples of Martian rock and soil back to Earth for analysis.
