I would say that half of the moon is always illuminated (the half that faces the sun) but because of the moon's angle and positioning in comparison to the sun and Earth, we can only see a certain amount of it each night.

The moon has one face wich always faces the earth. As it goes around the earth, there is always some area (almost half of it) which faces away from the sun and is therefore dark. None is always bright.
