Sand dunes are formed on the coast when waves carry sand onto the shoreline and the wind blows it into drifts. The sand gets trapped on plants such as Sand Couch and Marram Grass and the embryo dunes start to grow. Marram Grass is one of the most important dune plants. It has long roots that grow down deeply in search of water. These roots help to hold the dunes together.

Further inland the dunes are more stable and have lots of different plants, mosses and lichens growing on them. There can even be a very wet area. This is known as the 'dune slack' and rushes and reeds that like lots of water will grow here.

Sand dunes are a very important habitat. They are also a popular place for people to visit. However they are very fragile environment and changes can take place quickly. To protect the dunes plants from being trampled too much, special wooden paths called 'boardwalks' are put down for people to walk on.

What are four types of sand dunes?

Barchan dunes are crescent-shaped with horns pointing downwind. Parabolic dunes have a U-shape with horns pointing upwind. Transverse dunes are long ridges perpendicular to the wind direction. Star dunes are complex, multi-crested dunes formed by variable wind directions.

How are star dunes formed?

Star dunes are formed by multiple winds converging from different directions, creating a unique, multi-armed shape with long ridges that radiate from a central point. These dunes are typically found in areas with limited vegetation and strong, consistent winds that shift and redistribute sand particles, allowing the dunes to grow and develop their distinct star shape over time.

Where and how tall is the the largest sand dunes?

The largest sand dunes in the world are found in the Namib Desert in Namibia, specifically in the Sossusvlei area. These dunes, known as "star dunes," can reach heights of over 1,000 feet (about 300 meters). Dune 7, one of the tallest in the region, is often cited as the highest accessible dune for visitors. The striking red color of the dunes is due to the iron oxide present in the sand.
