  1. The sun has a magnetic field that gets twisted around inside the sun as it spins. There are places on the sun where this magnetic field rises up from below the sun's surface and pokes through, creating sunspots.Sunspots are magnetic and often have a north and south pole like a magnet. hope this helps!

Sunspots are blindingly bright - they only appear dark due to the contrast of the surrounding matter, which is hotter and therefore brighter. Sunspots are typically around 1200 degrees Celsius (or Kelvin) cooler than the surroundings.

Sunspots are cool regions of the suns surface that are also areas of intense magnetic fields.

The general theory behind sunspots is that the mangetic fields in the region have become all twisted and tangled as the gas in the sun moves around. This tangle interferes with the orderly motion of underyling convection cells. These convection cells are rising streams of hot gas that move energy in from the hot core of the sun (where the nuclear fusion generates energy) up to the surface. This just like how boiling water has hot spots that rise to the surface and cause it to roil and ripple.

By hampering these convection cells the magnetic fields essentially reduce the amount of heat and energy that spot on the sun recieves, allowing it to cool, and appear dark compared to it's surrounding area.

The surface of the sun is normally ~5,000o C, while a sunspot is ~3,500o C. That's still hot, but enough of a difference that it appears dark in comparison.

It isn't particularly hard; you can observe larger sunspots even in a small telescope. Warning: Don't try to look directly through the telescope at the Sun; this is very dangerous for your eyes. Instead, project the image on a piece of white paper placed behind the telescope.

Sunspots are made of exactly the same stuff as the rest of the surface of the Sun (hydrogen plasma). They appear because they are slightly cooler than the surrounding Sun Surface and are caused by loops of magnetic field pushing their way up through the surface of the Sun. These areas of intense magnetic field have the effect of inhibiting the convection of heat from the lower layers of the sun and this causes the area affected by the fields to be cooler than neighbouring areas. The temperature difference causes less light to be emitted by the Sun's photosphere in the area of the spot.

solar flares are caused by the periodic entangling and untangling of the sun's magnetic field. occasionally a field line becomes twisted to the point it tries to snap back into place, in doing so it can throw out a little solar material, a solar flare.
