The first three space programs in the US were Project Mercury, Project Gemini, and Apollo program. These programs were instrumental in advancing human space exploration and culminated in the first human landing on the Moon during the Apollo missions.
American human flight programs were; Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Shuttle, the recently nixed Orion, and the up and coming SpaceX Falcon series. The last of which is the largest private space venture in history.
Yuri Gagarin was the first human to travel into space on April 12, 1961. He was a Soviet astronaut. Alan Shepard was the first American astronaut in space on May 5, 1961, as part of the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission.
The Russian Space Station Mir which had an estimated 15 years in orbit, far longer than originally planned and then there were the earlier Salyut series of space stations which helped prepare the way for future research work of Mir and the International Space Station.
