the sun makes it shine
Meteor is often referred to as "The Shooting Star of the Meteor Galaxy."
A shooting star is more properly called a meteor, as it has nothing to do with stars. A piece of rock, perhaps only the size of a dust grain, falls into the atmosphere from space. The heat of friction between the meteor and the air causes the air to ionize and glow. Normally the rock is completely vaporized before it reaches the ground.
The critical temperature for nuclear fusion in a star's core is around 10 million degrees Celsius. At this temperature, hydrogen nuclei can overcome their mutual repulsion and fuse to form helium, releasing energy in the process. This energy production is what causes a star to shine.
a usually mistaken name for meteor is a shooting star
A meteoroid is a small metallic or rocky body. If it passes through the atmosphere causing it to burn up is called a meteor or shooting star. Any remnants that reach the earth are called meteorites.
a meteor is NOT a star it is a bit of rock

Something that'd shine on its own, like a star.
When a meteor reaches the earths atmosphere, it starts to burn due to friction. The glow produced due to its burning makes it look like a falling star(shooting star). Hence they are called shooting stars.
Shooting stars are actually objects burning in the Earth's atmosphere. The name "shooting star" originates from ancient times (before advanced scientific investigation) when these burning meteors were though to actually be stars shooting across the night sky. Those that survive and crash onto the Earth's surface are then called meteorites.
The chances of it being a meteor are much greater than it being a star. Stars are burning gasses. If there is no fire then it could be a meteor.
A meteor. If any of it survives the fall through the atmosphere and makes it to Earth, that part is a meteorite.
