When a red giant reaches the end of its life and is unable to fuse any more elements, the core cools and collapses due to gravity. The outer layers are ejected and become a planetary nebula, and all that remains of the star is an extremely dense core, which is called a white dwarf.
Depending upon the mass of the star before turning into supergiants;
1. Supergiant stars (1.5 - 3 times the mass of the Sun) will eventually supernova and degenerate into a Neutron Star. (see Supernova and Neutron star on wikipedia)
2. Supergiant stars (3+ times the mass of the Sun) will supernova, and the resulting collapsing of gravity at the star's location will form a black hole. (see Hypernova on wikipedia)
A red giant is a star that is in its last stages of stellar evolution before it dies off. A star begins to run out of its fuel such as carbon, hydrogen and oxygen before going into the final stages.
it looks big and red
--
Despite it's redish look, it's size is also another contribute to it's name. The reason why it is red is because it has cooled and the cooler a star is, the reder it is in color. It sounds ridiculous, but that is the way space has been working.
Other then that, a red giant consisted of Helium, Hydrogen, and non-fusing hydrogen that in a way acts as dead weight.
Stars, like our sun, will one day die. Depending on how big they are, a multitude of things could happen. For a star to become a Red Giant, however, it would have to be a medium-sized star, again like our sun. When a medium-sized star starts to die, it's outer layers will expand, making it a Red Giant. In the case of our sun, when that happens, in approximately 6.4 billion years, it's outerslayers will reach as far as Jupiter, killing all life on planet Earth. After that, the outer layers will dissipate, leaving only the core, then called a white dwarf. Once the white dwarf runs out of fuel, it will cease to glow, finnaly dying and becoming a black dwarf.
· star uses up H in core and begins fusing He >C
· H fusion begins in area around core causing outer part of star to swell
it is formed when the star uses up all its fuels and it swells up.
In about 4-5bllion years.
I am pretty sure it becomes a giant if I'm not mistaken.
After a star burns up all it's hydrogen, it becomes a red giant.
A star turns into a red giant when it lose fuel and die. If a star isn't a massive star then it expands into a red giant. After that it becomes a white dwarf. If its massive then it collapses on itself and turns into a black hole.

Red giant is a type of star.

As the star balloons into the red giant phase, its surface becomes further away from the core and cools. This changes the color appearance of the star from orange or blue to red.
After a star burns up all it's hydrogen, it becomes a red giant.
A red giant is when a star becomes very large. A super red giant is when a star becomes very extremely large. People think that in a few billion years, our sun will become a red giant and swallow up earth.

first its called the main sequence star like the sun then it becomes a red giant then it becomes a red super giant and if it is huge a hyper-giant like VY Canis Majoris (largest star known) then it explodes and it becomes a planetary nebula then it becomes a white dwarf
After a star burns up all it's hydrogen, it becomes a red giant.
A red main sequence star would be a red dwarf or a branch red giant. To be on the main sequence, you have to have hydrogen nuclear fusion.
first its a protostar then it move to a blue star, next the blue star changes to a red giant thehn a red supergiant then either a supernova or blackhole
The next step in its life is to become a "red giant" star.
