As the first man to orbit the earth (on April 12, 1961), Yuri Gagarin was the first person to actually view the Earth from space. He experienced a brief period of weightlessness, and he also experienced very high G-forces during re-entry (as a pilot, he was familiar with these). Other than the recorded information on his flight, the short duration (and necessary concentration on the mission), meant that detailed experimentation was deferred until later Soviet space missions.
