Cosmos and Damian were twin brothers who were Christian martyrs. They were known for their healing abilities and were believed to have cured many people. In the 3rd century AD, they were persecuted for their faith and ultimately martyred.

Cosmas and Damien were not canonized. They were proclaimed a saint by earlyChristians because of their martyrdom. The canonization process did notcome into existence until the 12th century. In the primitive Church,martyrs were immediately recognized as witnessing to the perfection ofChristian life on earth, having shown the ultimate proof of their love forChrist by the offering of their lives. By the sacrifice of their livesfor Christ, they attained Heaven in eternal glory and were indissolublyunited to the Lord, the Head of the Mystical Body.

Damian is not in the Bible. The Christian saint of that name was the twin brother of another saint, and together that are generally known as "Cosmos and Damian." They were martyred in about 287 AD.
