The sundial fin needs to point directly towards true north in order for the sundial to accurately display the correct time based on the sun's position in the sky.

Rocket fins help stabilize and control the flight of the rocket by providing aerodynamic stability. They help keep the rocket pointed in the right direction during launch and prevent it from tumbling or veering off course.
fin and tip (cone).

The tail fin acts as a rudder on a ship would.Turning the fish in whichever direction it wants to go in.
A fish uses it's fin to change direction as it swims.
The fin will help the direction of your board depending on your movement. Also it will be a factor on the speed depending on how deep are you ; and the type of wave that you are running. The fin will cut trough the water.
The pelvic fin is in the bottom; toward the front side of the middle. The pectoral fin is on the bottom, in the front. The pectoral fin helps control the direction the perch moves. The pelvic fin also controls the direction it moves. The anal fin is in the bottom back side and helps the fish balance. The dorsal fins are on top, one in the middle one it the back and stabalize the fish and aid in sharp turns. The caudal fin, or the tail, is in the back and helps to propel the fish through the water.
Because the shape of a fin is flat and thin, it has a very narrow cross-section in one direction and a much larger cross-section in a perpendicular direction, consequently, a fish can use the fin to guide its motion through water; effectively, the fin makes it easier for a fish to move in a forward direction and less likely to slip sideways. There are also movable fins which can be used to actively push the fish in the direction it wishes to go.
The pectoral fin mantains how deep the fish can go.
It's the ventral fin and My best Guess to it's purpose is that it helps stablize the forward movement in the fish, bit like the skegs on kayaks. possibly gives some direction control, like a rudder, and streamlining as well
All of them used in conjunction. In the same way both of your legs and the rest of your body are used to help you change direction.

dolphins need a soft dorsal fin because of their way of swimming. If they were to have a hard, sharp, stiff or even ruff fin it would put weight on them and e tilt them to the side which then would interfere with their other fins.
