The Aurora Borealis has different names in different parts of the world. In Southern latitudes, it's referred to as The Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis. North of the equator, it's referred to as the Northern Lights.

The term Aurora Borealis comes from the Greek name for the north wind - Boreas and Aurora - the Roman goddess of dawn.

In the Middle Ages, the lights were believed to be messages from God. And the Cree (Native Americans), called it the Dance of the Spirits.
